The Monterey Bay Aquariums's jelly exhibit is probably a favorite of many. The graceful undulations of a jelly can be quite hypnotic. I recall a dive at North Monastery where I was borrowing a friend's video camera. As I focused in, I found my breathing becoming more and more in rhythm with the pulsing of the golden bell. As a photographer, I look forward to diving in the world famous lake in Palau, full of jellies.
Today, we had a modest display of moon jellies (Aurelia aurita) on our first dive at the great pinnacle in Bluefish Cove. This was my first run on the Beach Hopper to Point Lobos. I usually kayak dive, and rarely dive the great pinnacle, so it was a real treat to do my safety stop, and then some, amongst some jellies. I was tempted to let my girlfriend, Kendra, drive back to Monterey alone while I hitched a ride on the Hopper. You see, Mary Jo told me earlier in the day that on the ride down, there was a patch of moon jellies so thick, there were more jellies than water. Alas, I called it a day. If I fulfilled my dream of a frame full of jellies, then I wouldn't need to go to Palau...and I really want to go to Palau.
