As a diver in the cyber age, I have become accustomed to scanning the swell and buoy forecasts in an effort to somehow predict how good the diving may be. I often trick myself into believing the blue colors representing 2 and 4ft swells are indeed indicators for the color of the water...a 'vis forecast' so to speak. Well, you know what? Today they matched. That blue on the WAM model matched the water.
"Epic visibility" was today's mantra. I couldn't keep saying it. However, as folks who dive around these parts well know, often with clear water comes cold water. And poor ol' me forgot my drysuit underwear at home. Cotton socks, boxers, Homer Simpson t-shirt and fleece sweatshirt were all I wore under my aging 4mm neoprene drysuit. And yes, it was an Oceanic 49 °.
With water clarity in excess of 70', I found myself wishing my fisheye lens was even wider. How often does that happen? Super God Beams shone through the giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera), and every fish-eating anemone (Urticina piscivora) and sunstar (Pycnopodia helianthoides) became even more interesting with beaming rays through crystal waters.
