I have always been intrigued at the details fish display once you have an image for reference and therefore have the ability to view small fish blown up on the computer screen at home. Cirri pop up on fish I didn't even know had them. And as far as cirri go, fringeheads and warbonnets are the rockstars. However, I think my personal fringehead count is at two. Every time I read about "Linda's fringehead" on ba_diving, I get green with envy. My warbonnet count was stuck at zero.
Well, today I got a treat on my dive at South Monastery. Watching the swells roll in, I dreaded the imminent surge. Rolling back and forth along the bottom attempting to photograph a coralline sculpin (Artedius corallinus), I could feel the frustration rising. Don't get me wrong, I was still having a blast, just not getting any images. As I rose off the bottom to continue on, I spotted a mosshead warbonnet (Chirolophis nugator) pop its little head out of a recess in the reef. Jackpot! Although I didn't nail any one image in all aspects, I came away thrilled to have seen my first ever warbonnet. |
