Bluefish Cove 12.02.03

Another gorgeous Fall day at Point Lobos. Sunny, light breeze. Air temps in the high 60s, water temp in the low 50s. Ahh, Carmel at its best.

The Pelagics were in with many Moon Jellies, Salp Chains and, last but not least, dozens of the Sea Butterflies (Corolla calceola). Like translucent little manta rays.

moon jelly, aurelia labiata, kelp forest, macrocystis pyrifera
lingcod on rocky reef, ophiodon elongatus
california hydrocoral, stylaster californica
salp in kelp, cyclopsalpa affinis
Visibility was roughly 40', but the sunshine, calm water and pelagics made for a very relaxing dive. Photography-wise, it was the hydrocoral that caught my eye. I barely missed a prize-winning shot, though. I approached a better-than-average lingcod, and as I was getting my strobe in position, I look up to see it yawning. The mouth must've been the size of a Nerf football. It could've swallowed a bluefish whole...and I'm sure it has!

I've included some topside photos from the paddle out. Cheers!
